FAMILIAR FACES: KATE MACDONALD

Meet Kate, our fabulous 1st Assembly Community Manager! After joining the team back in November, she’s been busy leading our 1st Assembly space in Lower Hutt. We caught with Kate to find out what she’s been up to lately.

QUICKFIRE ROUND

Power snack? Cheese. Especially smooshy cheese.

Power tune? Miracle Mile – Cold War Kids

Power routine to get you through a crazy day? A power tune + a power walk is always a good idea. Following up with a power snack is recommended.

THE LONG YARN

What’s your role at Creative HQ?

I’m the Community Manager at 1A – this includes a range of activities, like facilitating regular community events, membership contract admin, trips to the hardware store, and even a bit of spatial design!

* What even is 1A you ask? It’s a space for individuals and startups with a common focus – physical products. 1A is located in the Lower Hutt CBD.

What’s it like out in the Hutt?

Heaps good! Lower Hutt City has a long, rich history of manufacture and innovation (did you know Ford used to make Zephyr’s and Anglia’s in Seaview?!). There are some really exciting businesses out here, the Council is doing some really interesting smart cities work and the Callaghan’s Gracefield Innovation Quarter is just down the road. So basically, it’s all happening here in the Hutt.

Disclaimer: I was born and raised here so may be biased.

What are you currently working on?

I’ve been working with Luke (CHQ’s Head of Incubation) to re-design the 1A business incubation programme. Our new programme will provide founders with the coaching and learning opportunities they need to turn great physical products into high growth businesses. We are currently looking for new residents, so if this sounds like you get in touch!

What would the Creative HQ team say your superpower is?

Some might call it curiosity, others might call it nosy. I love knowing what other people are working on, what startups are on our radar, and what our stakeholders are up to. My calendar is full of showcases, meetups and coffee/ beer catch-ups. This helps me join the dots and make connections.

Share something that inspires you and why?

People that really care about what they do – whether it’s hardware startups, social change, or barbecuing the perfect brisket (my little bro is getting close to nailing that) – that sort of passion and energy is contagious and I love being around it.
