Fintech Activate is your launchpad. A short, action-focused programme designed to help aspiring fintech founders validate their concept, build a prototype and connect with New Zealand’s fintech ecosystem.
Whether your idea is scribbled in a notebook or already a basic prototype, this free programme will help you test it with real users and build momentum, fast.
For 8 weeks, 15 startup teams will combine learning with doing: from customer discovery and rapid prototyping with AI tools, to pitching and navigating compliance.
You’ll engage directly with key players like the NZ Fintech Fund and Financial Markets Authority, gaining industry insight and real connections.
This service is FREE (valued at $5,000 per participant) thanks to support from Wellington NZ and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. With a hybrid format and flexible online sessions, you can join from anywhere in Aotearoa.

What is Fintech?
Fintech means using technology to create new and better ways for people and businesses to manage money. From tools that help people pay, save, borrow, invest or get insured – to tech that helps financial institutions work smarter. We see Fintech as a space full of opportunities.
We’re especially excited about how founders can use modern tech like AI to solve real-world financial problems, making services easier, fairer, safer and more accessible.

What is Fintech Activate?
An 8-week programme for idea-stage fintech founders to validate their concept, build an MVP (minimum viable product) and plug into NZ’s fintech ecosystem. You’ll leave ready for accelerators or early-stage funding.
Who is eligible to apply?
Solo founders or small teams (2–3 people) in New Zealand, pre-product and pre-revenue. No prior startup experience is required – just commitment and curiosity.
How much does it cost?
Participation is completely free but we recommend you have a small amount of money to pay for AI tools to help you on your journey.
What is the time commitment?
Expect to commit 12–15 hours per week, including live workshops, peer group sessions, interviews and building your prototype. Most activities can be done during evenings and weekends.
