In the heart of New Zealand’s agricultural sector, innovation isn’t just a buzzword
— it’s a driving force shaping the future of farming. We sat down with Stuart Kay, Innovation Lead at Ballance
Agri-Nutrients to explore how their partnership on the Climate Response Accelerator 2024, is shaping the future of agriculture. Join us as we delve into the intersection of tradition and innovation in agriculture.

Tell us about your connection with Creative HQ

My journey with Creative HQ began in a previous role within the horticulture and arable industry where Creative HQ was involved. When I joined Ballance Agri-Nutrients, I was very aware that there’s different types of approaches to innovation.
I  saw an opportunity to infuse our innovation structure with fresh perspectives.

So, I reached out to Creative HQ, recognising the synergy between our organisations.  The complementary nature of Creative HQ to our company, I believe, adds significant value to our goals and objectives and enhances our ability to deliver to our farmers.

Give us a brief overview of what Ballance Agri-Nutrients does

Ballance Agri-Nutrients is a New Zealand farmer-owned co-operative.

We love the land as much as you, so we’re committed to farming more productively, profitably and sustainably. We  are focused on ensuring farmers and growers have access to the right nutrients, at the right time, and in the right manner.

Our purpose is to support creating the best soil and food on earth by providing essential tools and knowledge to farmers across New Zealand.

“This collaboration is a prime example of taking innovation to the next level, and it’s something I’m truly proud to be a part of.”

What motivated you to support the Climate Response Accelerator, and how does Ballance’s sponsorship contribute to addressing climate challenges?

As a primary industry-centric business, we’re acutely aware of the environmental challenges facing farmers. The Climate Response Accelerator presented an opportunity to support innovative solutions to these challenges.

The Accelerator is a platform that allows you to tap into new ideas and innovations from passionate individuals and startups. By fostering collaboration and supporting startups, Ballance Agri-Nutrients aims to drive innovation in the agricultural sector.

In my personal experience, you won’t find a group more passionate about the land, climate, and doing what’s right than New Zealand farmers and growers. It’s crucial for us to support them by fostering new ideas and innovations in this field, as it aligns closely with our core business values.

What kind of support and resource do you provide to startups in the accelerator?

Our sponsorship goes beyond financial support; it’s about providing mentorship, industry connections, and fostering a culture of innovation within the agricultural sector. We aim to offer insights, advice, and even make connections that can help these startups thrive.

Many of them have sought feedback, and we’re happy to share our expertise to boost their chances of success. Plus, being a larger organisation with a
wide-reaching team, there’s potential for these startups to partner with us commercially, leveraging our resources and networks. While that wasn’t our initial motivation, if there are opportunities for collaboration , hopefully that would be beneficial for everyone.

How do you see innovation playing a role in addressing environmental challenges, particularly in agriculture?

Innovation is essential for the growth and sustainability of the agricultural industry. By embracing diverse ideas and sustainable practices, we can reduce our environmental footprint while ensuring the long-term viability of farming. Initiatives like the Climate Response Accelerator are instrumental in driving this innovation forward.

By supporting startups and accelerators, and providing them with the resources they need, Ballance Agri-Nutrients aims to cultivate an environment where innovation thrives, leading to advancements in farming practices and increased resilience in the face of environmental challenges.

What are you most excited about for the teams within the accelerator?

It’s the diversity of perspectives and the focus on long-term goals that really excites me. We’re not just looking to mitigate impacts; we’re aiming to make a positive difference for New Zealand, especially when it comes to turning waste into valuable resources.

There’s some really fantastic thinking that’s gone on for a long time in many cases to get to the point they are. But whilst they’ve got all the passion, they’re very realistic about where they’re going. It’s that passion with realism, that’s a great combo for success.

Working with startups is always exhilarating—you can feel the passion and creativity buzzing in the air. From my team’s perspective, it’s all about building connections, having meaningful conversations, and exploring synergies that can benefit everyone involved.

This collaboration is a prime example of taking innovation to the next level, and it’s something I’m truly proud to be a part of.
