What we did together
Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation is a partner with us for the Climate Response Accelerator 2024

Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation
Whakatupu Aotearoa, a strategic philanthropic foundation focussed on achieving a thriving and restored Aotearoa, is tackling one of the world’s most urgent challenges—climate change.
Their active involvement in the Climate Response Accelerator, powered by Creative HQ, highlights their unwavering commitment to nurturing innovative solutions for a greener, low-carbon future.
A Historical Connection with Creative HQ
Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation’s collaboration with Creative HQ began with our second climate accelerator initiative.
“Our partnership is founded on a shared vision that the market is crucial for achieving climate goals. Creative HQ’s extensive experience and strong industry connections in New Zealand make them an ideal partner for nurturing emerging entrepreneurs and breakthrough innovations,” Carl from the Foundation explained.
This collaboration emphasises the need for a supportive environment that encourages entrepreneurs and innovators to develop effective low-carbon solutions.
“We believe the market is critical in helping us achieve a low-carbon, sustainable and prosperous future. To make this a reality, we need an environment that supports entrepreneurs and innovators, providing them with the capital and opportunities to turn their ideas into impactful solutions.”
The Mission of Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation
The Foundation invests in both the charitable sector and early ventures aligned with their vision of a sustainable economy.
“We go beyond traditional philanthropy; our investment approach aims to achieve social and environmental returns alongside financial gains. Investing in low-carbon innovations is a key part of our strategy to create significant impact, both locally for our communities in Aotearoa but also on the global stage,” Carl shared.
Established just over three years ago, the Foundation focuses on catalytic and venture philanthropy within our environment and communities for a restored and thriving Aotearoa.
“As philanthropists, we have the unique ability to take on risks and support accelerators that increase the pipeline of entrepreneurs, with success measured by ventures securing additional funding and achieving scale”

Motivation Behind Supporting the Climate Response Accelerator
As a philanthropic investor, Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation embraces risks differently, fostering an environment where new ideas can be tested and scaled.
“Supporting the Climate Response Accelerator aligns with our goal to expand the pipeline of entrepreneurial talent necessary for thriving market-based solutions. Success for us means seeing these ventures secure further funding and scale their innovations,” Carl added.
Contributions to Climate Challenges
Through their sponsorship, the Foundation aims to contribute to a broader array of climate solutions. “By investing in the accelerator, we aim to create an ecosystem where innovative solutions can thrive, pushing us closer to a sustainable future.
“As philanthropists, we have the unique ability to take on risks and support accelerators that increase the pipeline of entrepreneurs, with success measured by ventures securing additional funding and achieving scale,” Carl stated.
Supporting Innovators in the Accelerator
The Foundation provides crucial financial support to startups in the accelerator, understanding the financial challenges early-stage ventures often face.
“Our primary contribution is funding, but we also believe in the power of community and collaboration among startups. This wraparound support is essential for early-stage companies to progress beyond initial development phases and start creating market-fit products,” Carl explained.
Future Aspirations and Excitement for the Accelerator Teams
Carl is particularly excited about the potential of deep tech innovations and their ability to tell a compelling New Zealand story of innovation and environmental stewardship.
“The deep tech solutions being developed by these teams have the potential to position New Zealand as a leader in sustainable practices globally. Additionally, many teams’ focus on waste reduction aligns perfectly with our goals of environmental sustainability,” Carl noted.
As Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation continues to support the Climate Response Accelerator, its focus remains on fostering a generation of entrepreneurs who can drive significant environmental and social change.
The Foundation’s involvement reflects a commitment to innovation and sustainability and underscores a deep belief in the power of collaborative efforts to create a sustainable future for all.
